As an outstanding surround loudspeaker, the Theatrus T80 Slim combines numerous excellent properties. The very small overall depth enables convenient wall mounting without having to forego the acoustic advantages of the extremely high-quality drivers. To do this, our engineers have pushed the limits of what is technically feasible. It also cuts a fine figure as a built-in loudspeaker and, thanks to its high efficiency, can also fill large rooms with sound without distortion and with the highest level of detail. The jumpers on the back allow the sound to be optimally adapted to the respective use and thus unleash the full potential of these home cinema specialists.
AMT Tweeter
Why does Theatrus use an AMT tweeter for home cinema? Our engineers have been working on various materials for AMT tweeters since 2008. From this research, the AMT tweeter for the SuperTweeter series was developed from 2018. This AMT has an efficiency of 103dB paired with excellent fine resolution. For use in the new home cinema series, a special protective circuit was added to enable distortion-free sound even in large rooms with maximum dynamics.
What makes the Theatrus AMT tweeter so unique? There are basically two classes of tweeters: PA tweeters, which usually have a high efficiency of more than 100 dB, or HiFi tweeters, which often only have a low efficiency of 92 dB or less. Although PA tweeters can handle the high home cinema sound pressure levels, they then have a lower resolution and detail reproduction compared to HiFi tweeters. Therefore, using a PA tweeter for the Theatrus series was out of the question. So another solution had to be found and the AperionAudio AMT tweeter is the optimal result.
2" Dome Midrange
Midrange speakers have a particularly demanding task in home cinema. On the one hand, they should give structure and details to the sound image, on the other hand, their radiation characteristics must illuminate the entire row(s) of seats as ideally as possible. In addition, unwanted reflections on the wall, floor and ceiling should be prevented. In order to master this challenge, the Theatrus series relies on two specially arranged 2" dome midrange drivers. These are each equipped with a low-distortion 50mm voice coil. In the lower midrange, this ensures perfect impulse fidelity, especially at high power levels. In the upper midrange, the domes then show their advantages with the extremely even radiation behavior and the unrivaled clarity of the sound. The special arrangement avoids reflections on the floor and ceiling, while a whole row of listening places can enjoy perfect sound next to each other.
8" Curv™ Woofer
It is a real challenge to produce a large woofer that has high efficiency on the one hand and achieves detailed sound quality on the other. This applies to all classic cone materials such as paper, aluminum, Kevlar or woven fiberglass. Instead, the woofers of the Theatrus series rely on a special Curv™ material from the German manufacturer Propex. This material combines important properties: It is light, stiff and has a high temperature resistance without water absorption. The decisive factor for the incomparably precise sound, however, is the extraordinarily high modulus of elasticity and the high level of internal damping. The Curv™ material achieves all of these properties without the use of adhesives or resins, which is common with many other materials. This gives the woofers of the Theatrus series a decisive advantage: Because glue and resins impair the sound quality during production. Ultimately, the Curv™ woofers deliver exactly what the Theatrus line needs: high efficiency and at the same time outstanding sound quality in terms of fine resolution.
Sound customization
More and more home cinema owners want the widest possible picture for the best cinema experience and therefore rely on sound-transparent screens that are placed in front of the speakers. Unfortunately, any sound-transparent screen, no matter how good, dampens the treble noticeably and thus reduces the sound experience. For this reason, Theatrus Series speakers feature a jumper on the back. If the speaker is next to the screen, the jumper is placed at "Free Field". However, if the loudspeaker is behind a sound-transparent screen, the jumper is plugged in at "Acoustic Screen" and compensates for the high-frequency damping via the sophisticated crossover.
Another trend in high-quality home cinemas is the installation of the loudspeakers in a so-called baffle wall. The loudspeakers are built into a wooden stand that is closed at the front and then filled with insulating material. This installation has many acoustic advantages, but also has significant disadvantages if the loudspeakers are not designed for this installation. The Theatrus speakers have a second jumper on the back for this purpose. If the speaker is placed free-standing or hung on a wall, the jumper is set to "Free Field (On-Wall)". If the speaker is installed in a wall such as a baffle wall, the jumper should be set to "Baffle-Wall (In-Wall)". This compensates for the acoustic effects of installing it in a wall, and the maximum potential of the loudspeaker is ideally used.
Magnetic front covers
The magnets ensure a perfect hold of the front cover and thus, in addition to easy replacement, also a flawless speaker front with no visible grille holes. The black acoustic fabric is absolutely opaque and completely sound-transparent. Possible damage to the speaker is also effectively prevented.
High-quality multi-layer paintwork
The paint finish of the Theatrus series is based on a special anti-reflection paint in the color Stealth Black. This varnish, applied in several layers, significantly minimizes scattered light and thus ensures an even better picture in the home cinema.
